23 January 1999 David McKenzie SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 04 18-Jan-99 to 24-Jan-99 GENERAL SXT continues to perform properly. Solar activity was high during the week. Three M flares have been observed as of the time of this writing, including a large M5 LDE on 20-Jan. SXT TECHNICAL The SXT instrument is functioning nominally, no serious problems to report. KSC Tohbans found -- and cleared -- a "filter soft" error on Thursday. We may ask for an update to the normal pointing sometime soon, late this week or early next week. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/990122.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's Nugget describes motion and footpoint brightening associated with the M5 flare observed 20-jan-99. CAMPAIGNS There were no formal joint observing campaigns. SOHO is temporarily offline again. See the general coordination page at: http://sec.noaa.gov/solcoord/solcoord.html PERSONNEL Greg Slater arrived this week. SEMINARS The seminar this week was given by Hugh Hudson, who presented data and analysis of a possible coronal Moreton wave event observed by SXT. The case is building to suggest that the propagating brightness enhancement seen on 6-may-98 may really have been a wave, rather than (a) expanding loops or (b) loop-like ejecta. DRAFT SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 05 (25-Jan-99 to 30-Jan-99) No coordinated observations are currently planned, but we will watch the TRACE plans carefully and try to support their observations if we can. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 25-JAN-99 13:10 2 990125 P2 ARS1 STD Tuesday 26-JAN-99 13:27 3 990126 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 27-JAN-99 12:00 2 990127 P2 ARS1 STD Thursday 28-JAN-99 12:16 3 990128 P3 ARS1 DIFF Friday 29-JAN-99 10:49 2 990129 P2 ARS1 STD Saturday 30-JAN-99 11:05 3 990130 P3 ARS1 STD Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
