08 May 1999 David McKenzie CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 19 03-May-99 to 08-May-99 GENERAL Solar activity increased to moderate levels this week, the GOES background hovering in the low-C range at the end of the week. There were several M flares, including at least two long-duration events on 03-may and 08-may. SXT TECHNICAL SXT continues to operate well, no new problems to report. An update to the normal pointing was performed this week. We may ask for another update during week 20. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/990507.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week we record the events leading to the prediction of a CME event, and the eruption of that event. CAMPAIGNS SXT took part in JOP 104, following target regions hoping to see X-ray jets. We observed many brightening events; SUMER reports line shifts up to 400 - 600 km/s. That JOP continues during Week 20. Friday night 7-may we supported the VAULT rocket-borne observations by making images of AR 8525. The rocket mission was a success. Please see the general coordination page at: http://sec.noaa.gov/solcoord/solcoord.html For SXT plans, finger campaign@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp. PERSONNEL Dick Canfield returned to Montana. SEMINARS "Discussion: the Cusp Signature in Flares and Ejective Events" was led by Dick Canfield. The group discussed many issues surrounding cusps, flares, CMEs, and ejections; we tried to reach a consensus on what really constitutes a cusp, and what is the significance of the appearance of a cusp in association with a given event. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 20 (10-May-99 to 15-May-99) SOHO JOP104 (X-ray jets) continues through this week; JOP 100 (active region DEMs) will run during invisible orbits on Thursday night. We will try PFI-dominant during KSC orbits on Tuesday and Thursday, if the solar activity permits. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 10-May-99 10:20 2 990510 P2 ARS2 ST+J104 Tuesday 11-May-99 10:35 2 990511 P2 ARS2 ST+J104 (PFI DOM) Tuesday 11-May-99 14:01 4 990511 P4 ARS2 DK+J104 Wednesday 12-May-99 09:08 2 990512 P2 ARS2 DF+J104 Thursday 13-May-99 09:23 2 990513 P2 ARS2 ST+J104 (PFI DOM) Thursday 13-May-99 12:48 4 990513 P4 ARS2 ST+J100 <--not 104 Friday 14-May-99 07:55 2 990514 P2 ARS2 ST+J104 Saturday 15-May-99 08:10 2 990515 P2 ARS1 STD (maybe J100?) Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
