22 May 1999 David McKenzie CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 21 17-May-99 to 22-May-99 GENERAL There were several interesting flares at the beginning of the week; the end of the week was quieter. SXT supported JOPs 017 and 103 with ARS2 observations. SXT TECHNICAL The overexposure "streak artifact" (or "glitch") reappeared towards the end of the week, due to the continued presence of active regions at that location on the CCD. We are contemplating a minor westward shift in the normal pointing to reduce the time that these pixels are illuminated. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/990521.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week we describe plasma flow, ejected from a flare and channeled along magnetic field lines. CAMPAIGNS JOP 017 finished this week, and JOP 103 began. On Sunday 23-May is the last day of the VLA JOP 100. Please see the general coordination page at: http://sec.noaa.gov/solcoord/solcoord.html For SXT plans, finger campaign@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp. PERSONNEL No personnel changes. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 22 (24-May-99 to 29-May-99) JOP 103 (TRACE "moss") continues through this week; we will try to make ARS2 pointing at their target, if the target is bright and solar activity permits. We will continue making offpoint-terminators this week, in preparation for the upcoming campaign with UVCS. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 24-May-99 03:33 2 990524 P2 ARS2 ST+J103 Tuesday 25-May-99 03:48 2 990525 P2 ARS2 DK+J103 Wednesday 26-May-99 02:20 2 990526 P2 ARS2 ST+J103 Thursday 27-May-99 02:35 2 990527 P2 ARS2 DF+J103 Friday 28-May-99 02:50 2 990528 P2 ARS2 ST+J103 Saturday 29-May-99 01:22 2 990528 P2 ARS1 STD* The "J103" in the name refers to JOP 103. The "*" indicates that the UT date of the first pass of the day (which determines the Table ID) does not match the UT date of the actual upload. This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
