31 May 1999 Hugh Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 22 23-May-99 to 30-May-99 GENERAL Activity was not too low. Only two M flares, but several sigmoids that might have, including a rather wonderful one transiting the NW limb and showing us its elbows in 3D. The even on May 29 included a nice eruption, even though it wasn't an LDE. It came from the SE region (8557 or 8560) which also made an M flare this morning. SXT TECHNICAL No problems. We will want to do a re-point this week. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/990528.html Index: http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week there's a discussion of the anemone region that grew up accidentally in the TRACE/La Palma field of view - probably an excellent set of observations. We observed a flashing compact source in its leading part. CAMPAIGNS JOP 103 continued. Next week the UVCS offpoint campaign. Please see the general coordination page at: http://sec.noaa.gov/solcoord/solcoord.html For SXT plans, finger campaign@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp. PERSONNEL Greg Slater arrived; Dave McKenzie left. SEMINARS S. Watari (CRL) "Soft X-ray Counterparts of Flux Ropes" - timely! DRAFT SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 23 (31-May-99 to 5-Jun) The Tenerife observations (TRACE+SVST+CDS+MDI+us) aimed at "moss" continue through this week. We also will be making our final adjustments for the UVCS campaign, to start on June 7. The UVCS observations commence after the weekend. The first dedicated table would be uploaded as shown, 7-JUN-99 19:20 or near then. Offpoints could be scheduled ahead of time. We will probably proceed with essentially normal tables but increasing the AlMg "super long" entries (30 sec exposures) in number, activity permitting. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 30-MAY-99 00:10 2 950530 P2 ARS2 STJ103* Monday 30-MAY-99 05:18 5 950530 P5 ARS2 STJ103* Tuesday 1-JUN-99 02:08 3 950531 P3 ARS2 DIJ103* Wednesday 2-JUN-99 00:40 3 950601 P3 ARS2 DAJ103* Thursday 3-JUN-99 02:38 4 960602 P4 ARS2 STJ103* Friday 4-JUN-99 02:53 4 960603 P4 ARS2 STJ103* Saturday 4-JUN-99 23:42 3 960604 P3 ARS1 STD* Monday 6-JUN-99 22:29 ? std * Tuesday 7-JUN-99 19:20 ? uvcs * The "J103" in the name refers to JOP 103. The "*" indicates that the UT date of the first pass of the day (which determines the Table ID) does not match the UT date of the actual upload. This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
