July 5, 1999 B. Handy, H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 27 28-Jun-99 to 4-Jul-99 GENERAL Activity was very high, with numerous M flares but no X flares. Maybe there is something to the suggestion that the biggest flares happen mainly in the rising and decaying phases of a solar maximum? SXT TECHNICAL We've finished a whole cycle of terminator image acquisition, completing the database that began April 18. Accordingly, on July 2, we re-defined the normal pointing of Yohkoh to move the solar image 40" to the E (S/C to the W) and we hope that this will reduce the occurrence of dark-current artifacts at the NW limb. We will plan to do a CCD bakeout following the computer outage next week. PERSONNEL Piet Martens departed on Friday. SEMINARS Brian Handy gave a talk July 1 on "C IV observations from TRACE". We failed to succeed in projecting his movies, but he has pure C IV time-series imagery - quite interesting. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 28 (4-Jul-99 to 10-Jul) We are not aware of any special campaign activities this week, but will as usual try to coordinate with SOHO and TRACE if possible. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 5-JUL-99 05:42 2 970705 P2 ARS1 STANDARD Tuesday 6-JUL-99 09:21 3 970706 P3 ARS1 DARK Wednesday 7-JUL-99 09:36 3 970707 P3 ARS1 DIFFUSER Thursday 8-JUL-99 06:25 2 970708 P2 ARS1 STANDARD Friday 9-JUL-99 06:40 3 970709 P3 ARS1 STANDARD Saturday 10-JUL-99 06:55 3 970710 P3 ARS1 STANDARD This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
