July 9, 1999 B. Handy, H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 28 5-Jun-99 to 11-Jul-99 GENERAL Activity continues to be moderately high, with many C flares, several M flares, and still no X flares, supporting the Hudson heuristic: "Big flares only occur in the rising and declining phases of solar activity." SXT TECHNICAL The new terminator aquisition cycle has begun this week following the Yohkoh repoint on 2 July. The mainframe will be taken offline on 11-July, we will upload a standard table with an Al.1 terminator image to run until that Thursday, 15-July-1999. There were two false flare flags this week. [Post-weekly meeting note: It is not likely the mainframe will be back up in time for the Thursday pass. The table schedule will probably be revised this week.] The CCD bakeout will likely take place the following week. SEMINARS There were no seminars this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 28 (4-Jul-99 to 10-Jul) We won't be able to upload any tables until the SIRIUS mainframe is back on line. We will plan on a new table load on Thursday. No coordination with other observatories is planned for this week, and the following week we will likely do a CCD bakeout. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Thursday 15-JUL-99 03:01 2 970715 P2 ARS1 DARK Friday 16-JUL-99 03:15 2 970716 P2 ARS1 DIFFUSER Saturday 17-JUL-99 03:30 3 970717 P3 ARS1 STANDARD This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
