July 16, 1999 B. Handy, H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 29 12-Jun-99 to 18-Jul-99 GENERAL Activity has been low this week, with the baseline GOES averages dropping to mid-B levels and only a handful of low- to mid-C class flares. A large region coming over the east limb keeps us optimistic for more big flares. We observed the beginnings of a large CME blowing off the W limb on 15-July, later evident in LASCO C2 and C3 movies. SXT TECHNICAL This week was by design a very quiet week since the mainframe was down frequently for the first half of the week. It was a pleasant surprise, however, to find that the mainframe was back up and operational on Wednesday, a day earlier than planned. We have also been receiving data from SIRIUS on a sporadic basis all week long, so we were rarely in the dark as to Yohkoh's whereabouts for any length of time. The CCD bakeout is scheduled for next week. SEMINARS There were no seminars this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 30 (11-Jul-99 to 17-Jul) SXT will likely carry on standard operations this week until Thursday when we do the CCD bakeout. No other coordination is currently planned. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 19-Jul-99 00:34 2 990719 P2 ARS1 STANDARD Tuesday 20-Jul-99 00:49 2 990720 P2 ARS1 DARK Wednesday 21-Jul-99 02:46 3 990721 P3 ARS1 DIFFUSER Thursday 21-Jul-99 21:54 1 *990722 P1 ARS1 SPECIAL Friday 23-Jul-99 03:15 4 990723 P4 ARS1 STANDARD Saturday 24-Jul-99 04:44 3 990724 P3 ARS1 STANDARD The (*) in a table name means that the UT date and the JST date don't match. This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
