                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 31
                        25-Jul-99 to 1-Aug-99

GENERAL

Activity remains high, with a major sigmoid region in the S at
time of writing. Pat McIntosh predicts major flares, but he has
been wrong a couple of times recently. The year 1999 continues
without having shown us any X-class flares! Amazing.

SXT TECHNICAL 

Nothing to report. The terminator cycle is almost complete for
the new pointing target, and the Al.1 SFD's look reasonably
good. A normal pointing update (pointing axis ~10" N) was carried
out Saturday.

On Friday the Chief Observer forgot to transfer the SXT table. The
situation was recovered nicely by Kubo_san and the KSC tohbans. Thanks.

This week's nugget deals with the very nice M-class flare of July 25,
for which TRACE got Lyman-alpha, FeXXIV, and hot continuum
observations; Yohkoh saw an extended impulsive phase plus an arcade
and a mammoth eruption; SOHO saw the expected CME on the NW limb.

PERSONNEL

Brian Handy returned to Montana after training at the lower 
temperatures of Nobeyama prior to departure.

SEMINARS

There were no seminars this week.

No collaborations are planned during the coming week.  Because
the orbit and contact pass pattern are favorable, we will do
two tables on Monday (Tuesday morning JST) and get the dark
cal out of the way.

The (*) in a table name means that the UT date and the JST date 
don't match.

Continuing requests:

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official
five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to
other satellites.  That way we can keep the numbering straight in the
Yohkoh software system.

SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off-
pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer
for terminator off-pointing information.

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
