August 7, 1999 H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 32 2-Aug-99 to 8-Aug-99 GENERAL Activity remained high. The major sigmoid region in the S mentioned last week blew into the year's first X-class flare! According to the known distribution function for flare occurrence, based on the number of M-class flares in the first 7 months of 1999, there should have been 13-26 X-class flares (there were none). So we are learning something. See this week's nugget for further comments. SXT TECHNICAL Nothing out of the ordinary. SXT SCIENCE We are going to try to do a "near real time" eclipse page, with a movie only 1.5 hours old, in time for the 10:00 p.m. news in Tokyo. Wish us luck! Initial location, at least, will be http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/eclipse/qrt.html but it will also be linked from the eclipse prediction nugget, 990716.html For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/990806.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget deals, of course, with the X-class flare of Aug. 2. Its impulsive phase was not observed by SXT so we could not tell much about its eruptivity, but it was a compact flare rather than a giant arcade. CAMPAIGNS For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No changes. SEMINARS There were no seminars this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 33 (9-Aug to 14-Aug-99) There will be a set of eclipses on August 11. We will try to catch them in "movie mode", quarter-resolution FFIs (table ECL1), and with PFIs set to a bright feature in the track of the limb (table ECL2). ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 9-AUG-99 19:36 5 990809 P5 ARS1 DARK* Tuesday 10-AUG-99 16:24 3 990810 P3 ARS1 ECL1* Wednesday 11-AUG-99 11:32 1 990811 P1 ARS0 ECL2 Wednesday 11-AUG-99 13:13 2 990811 P2 ARS1 DIFF Thursday 12-AUG-99 11:46 1 990812 P1 ARS1 STD Friday 13-AUG-99 17:07 4 990813 P4 ARS1 STD* Saturday 14-AUG-99 12:13 2 990814 P2 ARS1 STD As previously, the (*) in a table name means that the UT date and the JST date don't match. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
