                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 34
                         16-Aug-99 to 22-Aug-99


GENERAL

The level of solar activity rose again, and a nice eruptive sigmoid
appeared just at the beginning of Whole Sun Month 3. This triggered
its selection as a target of Max Millenium Campaign 2. Since this
happened, it has been quiet but a huge region appeared on the SE limb.
It has (or they have) produced LDEs and a series of extremely impulsive
M-class flares, one of which (M9.8) almost became this year's second
X-class event.

No particular news, except for the campaign activities.

                       SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 35 
                         (23-Aug to 28-Aug-99)

The coordinated observations this week include Whole Sun Month 3
and the MM02, the sigmoid target-of-opportunity study. During the
bulk of this week, there will be no Chief Observer in residence,
so we will have little flexibility regarding the sequence of table
uploads.

As previously, the (*) in a table name means that the UT date and
the JST date don't match.

Continuing requests:

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official
five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to
other satellites.  That way we can keep the numbering straight in the
Yohkoh software system.

SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off-
pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer
for terminator off-pointing information.

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.


SPECIAL NOTE FOR WEEK 35

The Chief Observer will not be at ISAS between Tuesday and Saturday.
The SXT sequence tables for this time range have been prepared and
are waiting for transfer via SXTSPT to SSOC. This should be done
one at a time by the KSC tohbans, according to the usual manual
instructions. If any upload needs to be cancelled, the table that
had been scheduled should be uploaded at the next opportunity.
