26 September 1999 H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 39 20-Sep-99 to 26-Sep-99 GENERAL The biggest flare was a C9.4 (Sep. 21), and the bottom kind of dropped out of solar activity by mid-week. A combination of uplink problems (transmitter) and typhoons conspired so that we lost two days of data, but things looked very normal entering the weekend. SXT TECHNICAL No particular problems. The Yohkoh normal pointing will need an update on Monday evening. SXT SCIENCE We missed a couple of "flareless CMEs" (this is Joe Gurman's oxymoron, not mine) because of poor coverage. Interestingly the first of them reportedly had a high velocity, something not normally associated with quiet-Sun events. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/990917.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget summarizes Hudson's weird idea about solar magnetic implosions. It is abjectly theoretical, but don't worry - at this level of theoretical work, there are no equations! CAMPAIGNS For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html We are engaged in informal specialized observations aiming at the ceaselessly interesting interconnecting loops. PERSONNEL N. Nitta returned to Palo Alto. B. Handy arrived from Bozeman. SEMINARS None on account of the equinoctial holiday. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 40 (27-Sep-99 to 3-Oct-99) If the Sun continues to be not active, we will continue to explore the sequences to observe interconnecting loops. But it is up the SXT CO, Brian Handy. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 27-Sep-99 14:13 1 990927 P1 ARS1 STD Tuesday 28-Sep-99 16:09 3 990928 P3 ARS1 DARK Wednesday 29-Sep-99 12:58 1 990929 P1 ARS0 IL+DIFF Wednesday 29-Sep-99 18:05 4 990929 P4 ARS1 STD Thursday 30-Sep-99 14:54 2 990930 P2 ARS0 IL Thursday 30-Sep-99 16:36 3 990930 P3 ARS1 STD Friday 1-Oct-99 11:44 1 991001 P1 ARS0 IL Friday 1-Oct-99 15:07 3 991001 P3 ARS1 STD Saturday 2-Oct-99 11:56 1 991002 P1 ARS0 IL Saturday 2-Oct-99 17:03 4 991002 P4 ARS1 STD This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
