1 October 1999 B. N. Handy CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 40 27-Sep-99 to 4-Oct-99 GENERAL Solar activity has remained low all week, though activity has improved since last week. Several high C-class flares were recorded, but the x-ray baseline remains at the mid-B level. SXT TECHNICAL SXT observed a C9 class flare on 28-Sep-1999. What is noteworthy about this flare is that the flux level was below the current threshold of the flare trigger. We have about 5 SFD images immediately following this flare so this may provide a unique perspective on the global response to this event. The SXT CO found himself far from ISAS on two separate occasions this week and missed some non-critical table loads. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/991001.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget summarizes the process of data reduction for SFD images. This nugget is certified equation-free. CAMPAIGNS For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html We are engaged in informal specialized observations aiming at the ceaselessly interesting interconnecting loops. PERSONNEL Phil Shirts arrived from Palo Alto. SEMINARS G. Vekstein gave a spirited discussion on Magnetic Reconnection. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 41 (4-Oct-99 to 10-Oct-99) The plan is largely contingent on the whims of solar activity. If the sun remains quiet and placid, we will continue the [ceaselessly interesting] Joe Khan Interconnecting Loops campaign. Otherwise, we will pursue some active region studies. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 4-Oct-99 10:40 1 991004 P1 ARS1 STANDARD Tuesday 5-Oct-99 12:36 2 991005 P2 ARS0 IL Tuesday 5-Oct-99 14:18 3 991005 P3 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 6-Oct-99 11:07 2 991006 P2 ARS0 IL+DIFF Wednesday 6-Oct-99 14:32 4 991006 P4 ARS1 STANDARD Thursday 7-Oct-99 18:38 1 991007 P1 ARS1 STANDARD Friday 8-Oct-99 08:10 1 991008 P1 ARS0 IL Friday 8-Oct-99 11:34 3 991008 P3 ARS1 STANDARD Saturday 9-Oct-99 10:05 2 991009 P2 ARS0 IL Saturday 9-Oct-99 11:47 3 991010 P3 ARS1 STANDARD This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
