9 October 1999 D. McKenzie B. Handy H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 41 4-Oct-99 to 9-Oct-99 GENERAL Solar activity has remained low all week; several C-class flares were recorded, but the X-ray baseline is still in the mid- to high-B range. SXT TECHNICAL The instrument continued to perform well all week, no new problems to report. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/991008.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget describes a long-lived loop which appeared dark in the X-ray images. CAMPAIGNS For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Brian Handy returned to Montana, and David McKenzie arrived at ISAS. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 42 (11-Oct-99 to 16-Oct-99) A mostly standard plan this week. The MEDOC campaign JOP017 re-starts this week (previously run in May 1999), so we will try to make some supporting observations, if activity permits. Also if solar activity permits, we may try again to observe some of the transequatorial interconnecting loops. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 11-Oct-99 07:07 1 991011 P1 ARS1 STD Tuesday 12-Oct-99 09:02 2 991012 P2 ARS1 DARKCAL Wednesday 13-Oct-99 05:51 1 991013 P1 ARS0 DIFF+IL Wednesday 13-Oct-99 10:59 4 991013 P4 ARS1 STD Thursday 14-Oct-99 09:29 3 991014 P3 ARS1 STD Friday 15-Oct-99 08:00 3 991014 P3 ARS1 STD Saturday 16-Oct-99 04:48 1 991015 P1 ARS1 STD This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
