16 October 1999 L. Fletcher H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 42 10-Oct-99 to 16-Oct-99 GENERAL Solar activity has remained low all week, but with some hopeful signs of increase. Several C-class flares were recorded, and an X1.8 event on 14-Oct-99 09:00 UT. The X-ray baseline climbed slowly, reaching C-level at the end of the week. SXT TECHNICAL The instrument continued to perform well all week, no new problems to report. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/991015.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget describes a polar crown filament eruption. CAMPAIGNS For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Lyndsay Fletcher arrived from Palo Alto. Dave McKenzie left for a short trip to Taiwan. SEMINARS 2 seminars, on Thursday October 14th: 'A Sharper Tool than the Aly Conjecture' - Hugh Hudson (SPRC) and 'Balloon Project for Hard X-ray Flare Observations' - K. Kobayashi (Tokyo U.) SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 43 (18-Oct-99 to 23-Oct-99) DRAFT This week emphasizes joint flare observations with SUMER and TRACE, among others. See http://www.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html for details. This week has extremely poor KSC coverage, so that it will not be possible to do two uploads in any given day. We are trying this on Monday but with the contingency plan that the second table could be postponed if necessary. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 18-OCT-99 03:33 1 991018 P1 ARS1 DARKCAL Monday 18-OCT-99 08:40 4 991018 P4 ARS1 DIFF Tuesday 19-OCT-99 07:10 3 991019 P3 FLARE SPEC Wednesday 20-OCT-99 07:24 3 991020 P3 FLARE SPEC Thursday 21-OCT-99 04:11 2 991021 P2 FLARE SPEC Friday 22-OCT-99 04:25 3 991022 P3 FLARE SPEC Saturday 23-OCT-99 01:14 1 991022 P1 ARS1 STD This plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
