7 November 1999 H. Hudson D. McKenzie CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 45 31-Oct-99 to 7-Nov-99 GENERAL Solar activity started low but wound up with a flourish, in the form of a huge arcade event at the limb from the new active region in the north, 8759. There will be a special observation on Monday, Nov. 15, to record Yohkoh's second transit of Mercury. Next week also we will see the Leonids again. SXT TECHNICAL The instrument continued to work well. The adjustment last week to the flare patrol image seem to have had the desired effect, in that we missed no flare locations this week. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/991029.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget comments on the behavior of the transequatorial loops, which varied slowly with time. CAMPAIGNS For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Lyndsay Fletcher returned to Palo Alto; Dick Canfield arrived from Bozeman. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 46 (07-Nov-99 to 13-Nov-99) There are no planned joint-observing campaigns, and in fact our flexibiility with Yohkoh is considerably reduced because of an extremely large fraction of KSC contact pass cancellations. We do include a test table preparatory for the Mercury transit on November 15 - please recall the princely observation we made in 1993 (November 6). ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 7-NOv-99 18:31 1 991107 P1 ARS1 STD* Tuesday 8-NOV-99 20:26 3 991108 P3 ARS1 DIFF* Wednesday 9-NOV-99 20:39 3 991109 P3 ARS1 DARK* Thursday 10-NOV-99 17:28 1 991110 P1 MERCURY* Thursday 10-NOV-99 20:53 3 991110 P3 ARS1 STD* Friday 11-NOV-99 15:59 1 991111 P1 ARS1 STD* Saturday 12-NOV-99 17:54 2 991112 P2 ARS1 STD* Sunday 13-NOV-99 18:07 3 991113 P3 ARS1 STD* As previously, the * in the table name indicates that the UT date doesn't match the JST date of the contact pass.
