                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 52 
                         20-Dec-99 to 26-Dec-99


GENERAL 

Two large active regions, AR 8798 and AR 8806, continued to be present,
with the latter being more flare productive.  However, no flares after 
22 December exceeded the GOES M1 level, and no large CMEs occurred.  
A region coming up from the NE limb, AR 8810, may be the target of 
FlareGenesis over the next week or so.


SXT TECHNICAL 

There are no outstanding issues at the moment.  Pointing has been updated 
on Saturday.

This week's science nugget continues a discussion of the involvement of
large-scale structures (filament channels?) in CMEs than a single active
region, which often assumes the S-like shape.


CAMPAIGNS 

We are still waiting for the FlareGenesis launch.  We continued to send
daily messages to Antarctica in support of target selection.

PERSONNEL
No change in the SXT ops personnel.  Greg Slater has graciously extended 
his stay primarily to finish fixing Y2K issues.  Jingxiu Wang returned
to Beijing with 22 GB of data stored on hard disk.


SEMINARS
No seminar.

If the launch of Flare Genesis takes place on 27 December, we still have 
two days this year to coordinate.  After that the next opportunity will
be only on 4-Jan-00.

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
