                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 53 
                         27-Dec-99 to 31-Dec-99 


GENERAL 

Three M-class flares at the beginning of the week, but then little
else. Potentially interesting E-limb activity did not seem to pan
out, at least judging by the NOAA reports. The balloon bearing the
Flare Genesis telescope is still in its box, so far as we know, so
we hope that activity resumes in good time.

SXT TECHNICAL 

There are no outstanding issues at the moment.  Minor Y2K bugs here
and there, nothing urgent (but it is not midnight yet).

Inspired by an AGU press release and a visit to one of the world's
electron headquarters sites, this week's nugget deals with how in
the world the Sun could manage to turn the solar wind off for three
days. We all believe that it comes from the network, which looks
tiresomely the same day in and day out...

CAMPAIGNS 

We are still waiting for the FlareGenesis launch.  Our support messages
will resume Jan. 4, assuming that all goes well.

this week, and this reflects that. We are a bit confused about
week numbers (Jan. 2 is a Sunday and Wallops .w01 ends on this
day).

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
