                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 02 
                        2-Jan-00 through 9-Jan-00 


GENERAL 

Activity was low and the Flare Genesis telescope has not flown
yet - but soon, perhaps. An "almost" launch alert came today, with
a target suggested by Sara Martin, but it was not to be. 

SXT TECHNICAL 

Y2K bugs were prominent early in the week, leading to a cessation
of data flow and a restriction against uplinking SXT tables for one
day. Accordingly our first dark calibration was postponed. The worst
of the trouble seems to be past, although several small problems
persist.

This week's nugget follows up on last week's, which rashly speculated
that the solar wind might "disappear" again - we had a huge coronal
hole at disk center at the end of the year. This speculation did not
pan out, unfortunately; the solar wind speed rose to a high level.
The mystery of the solar cause of the "disappearing solar wind"
remains unsolved.

CAMPAIGNS 

We are still waiting for the Flare Genesis launch, and trying to help
with target selection as best we can.

We are likely to have the Flare Genesis telescope in polar orbit
this week, and this reflects that. This week we only get 16 (out
of a possible 30) KSC contact passes, so that we have little
flexibility in uplinks.

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
