January 16, 2000 H.S. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 03 10-Jan-00 through 16-Jan-00 GENERAL Activity rose again, to meet the Flare Genesis telescope half-way. The launch was successful and the systems are apparently working OK; the balloon is about halfway round the Pole on its way back to the recovery site. SXT TECHNICAL Y2K bugs continued. We were severely hampered by the loss of "temporary Sirius" late Friday night. Without this we can't see reformatted data. KSC tohban Shimojo has been very helpful in getting raw images onto the Web to help with Flare Genesis target selection. There is also now some software "fake_sfd" that does ad-hoc corrections, in case this happens again in the future. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000114.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html On Saturday T. Kosugi called D-toh to report that the Dec. 28 flare had an exceptionally hard HXT spectrum. Accordingly this week's nugget takes a quick look at this event. SXT looks great too - a mammoth loop filling and erupting. The HXT spectrum is arbitrarily hard, ie consistent with a slope -1.4. CAMPAIGNS Flare Genesis support will continue for the next week or two as the operation continues.. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL D. McKenzie arrived Sunday to take over as SXT_CO. SEMINARS Jan. 15: H. Hudson (SPRC), "The origins of CMEs". Basically a review of the last six years or so of D-toh research into SXT signatures of CMEs, spanning the spectrum from Klimchuk to Khan. January 16, 2000 H. S. Hudson SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 4 (17-Jan-00 to 22-Jan-00) The Flare Genesis telescope is in the air and seems to be functioning well. We will continue to support its observations as we can, which means lots of ARS0 or ARS2 on their targets. We are up to 18 contact passes this week, so the conflict situation seems to be improving. D. McKenzie will be Chief Observer in week 4. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 17-JAN-00 13:05 4 000117 P4 ARS2 FG Tuesday PM 18-JAN-00 11:35 3 000118 P3 ARS2 FG Wednesday PM 19-JAN-00 13:29 4 000119 P4 ARS2 DKCAL Thursday PM 20-JAN-00 08:34 2 000120 P2 ARS2 DIFF Friday PM 21-JAN-00 10:28 3 000121 P3 ARS2 FG Saturday PM 22-JAN-00 07:16 2 000122 P2 ARS2 FG Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
