January 22, 2000 D. McKenzie CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 04 17-Jan-00 through 22-Jan-00 GENERAL Activity hovered near the GOES C1 level, with three M flares during the week. Unfortunately, none of the M flares were in view of the Flare Genesis Experiment. The balloon has completed about 3/4 of its trek, with occasional computer problems. SXT TECHNICAL Y2K bugs cleared up after Monday, and no new problems have cropped up in the data systems. The CCD has developed a streak artifact on the west limb, due to overexposure. Factors contributing to the overexposure include the dedicated pointing to the Flare Genesis target, and probably NOT the SEU of last weekend. Extra dark-FFIs have been inserted into the QT/Hi table to monitor the fading of the artifact. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000121.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's Nugget is a followup to one written last century: Motions in an M flare, nugget started 22-Jan-99, finished 22-Jan-00. CAMPAIGNS Flare Genesis support will continue for most of this week; weaker-than-expected winds have led to longer-than-expected campaign. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL H. Hudson left Monday for the Whole Sun Month workshop. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. January 21, 2000 D. McKenzie SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 5 (24-Jan-00 to 28-Jan-00) The Flare Genesis telescope is still functioning, and we will continue to support; if the mission ends before Friday then we will return to standard operations. We have only one KSC pass on Wednesday, so we will not attempt a table upload. We'll make up for that on Thursday by attempting two table uploads. Saturday is a Yohkoh holiday. D. McKenzie will be Chief Observer in week 5. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 24-JAN-00 05:56 2 000124 P2 ARS2 DKCAL Tuesday 25-JAN-00 07:50 3 000125 P3 ARS2 FG Thursday 27-JAN-00 03:08 1 000127 P1 ARS2 DIFF Thursday 27-JAN-00 08:14 4 000127 P4 ARS2 FG/STD Friday 28-JAN-00 03:18 1 000128 P1 ARS2 FG/STD Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
