February 6, 2000 H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 06 29-Jan-00 through 6-Feb-00 GENERAL Activity soared, yielding an actual X-class flare today. That brings this year's count to 10 M, 1 X for those interested in statistics. SXT TECHNICAL No problems. We broached the idea of a redefinition of the normal pointing coordinates, moving the Sun about 15 HR pixels to the left on the CCD, in order to be gentler with the limb regions prone to artifacts. Minimal feedback resulted from this suggestion, so if the WOM approves it we will execute the repointing as soon thereafter as possible. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000204.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html The science nugget this week shows solar rotation, based on a recent APOD and work of Sam Freeland, and also shows a butterfly diagram that may contain about 2% of all the photons detected by SXT. CAMPAIGNS No coordinated campaigns have been scheduled for this week. We are unable to do KSC uplink/downlink between Monday and Friday because of the Astro-E launch. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No changes SEMINARS S. Yashiro, "Relation between Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Active Regions" - Dr. Yashiro, now! SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 7 (7-Feb-00 to 13-Feb-00) There is a VLA program this week, but we probably cannot do any special support because of the lack of KSC passes. Because of the Astro-E launch, we are reduced to 10 passes and will have an unprecedented three-day holiday Feb. 8-10 (JST). Worse yet, there is a Shuttle launch so we are at the mercy of Wallops cancellations. So this is a minimal plan. There are question marks on the passes of Feb. 10, so we may get them back and would then adjust the plan accordingly. Because of the reduced schedule, we moved the calibrations up to today. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Sunday AM 5-Feb-00 23:54 2 000205 P2 ARS1 DIFF* Sunday PM 6-Feb-00 03:20 4 000205 P4 ARS1 DARKCAL* Monday AM 6-Feb-00 22:24 1 000206 P1 ARS1 STD* Friday AM 11-Feb-00 02:35 4 000210 P4 ARS1 STD* Saturday AM 11-Feb-00 21:38 2 000211 P2 ARS1 STD* The * on Friday means that the UT date of the upload does not match the JST date. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
