February 12, 2000 D. McKenzie CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 07 07-Feb-00 through 12-Feb-00 GENERAL Solar activity was nearly the same as last week -- the GOES background was a little higher, but the number of flares above C5 was the same. The operational week was quiet, due to the schedule changes surrounding the events at Kagoshima. SXT TECHNICAL No new problems to report. On Saturday we adjusted the normal pointing of the spacecraft to aim approx. 50 arcsec further east. This was to reduce the amount of light falling on the weak pixels near the west limb. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000211.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html The science nugget this week describes the biggest flare of the century (so far), and shows some SXT and HXT data from this flare, which was reported by the BBC. CAMPAIGNS No coordinated campaigns have been scheduled for this week. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No changes SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 8 (13-Feb-00 to 20-Feb-00) This week's operations are standard, with no coordinated campaigns planned as of the time of this writing. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
