February 26, 2000 D. McKenzie CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 09 21-Feb-00 through 26-Feb-00 GENERAL Solar activity was variable this week; the X-ray background was above GOES C level for a few days, but the week began and ended at B-level. There were more than 10 flares above C5 -- five above M -- during this week. SXT TECHNICAL SXT functioned properly, no new problems to report. We will probably ask for an update to the Yohkoh normal pointing, early this week. Also, a "leap year" software bug was discovered and repaired in the mainframe code that generates our AOSLOS and FEM data. There was no harm done, only some temporary inconvenience. Finally, the acquisition of terminator images after the latest Yohkoh repointing has been terribly slow -- only one SFC in more than two weeks. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000225.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html The science nugget this week shows an unusual X-ray jet that appeared on 14-Feb-00. The motion of this jet suggests wave-like deformation, or possibly an untwisting of magnetic field. CAMPAIGNS No coordinated campaigns have been scheduled for this week. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Phil Shirts arrived to spend two weeks fixing all the computer problems we can find. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 10 (27-Feb-00 to 04-Mar-00) This week's operations are standard, with no coordinated campaigns planned as of the time of this writing. Because of the Magnetic Reconnection meeting in Tokyo this week, the SXT Chief Observers will be at D-toh only some of the time. We will check email frequently. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Tuesday AM 28-Feb-00 18:00 4 000228 P4 ARS1 STD Wednesday AM 29-Feb-00 16:28 4 000229 P4 ARS1 DKCAL Wednesday PM 01-Mar-00 13:15 2 000301 P2 ARS1 DIFF Thursday PM 02-Mar-00 13:26 3 000302 P3 ARS1 STD Friday PM 03-Mar-00 13:37 3 000303 P3 ARS1 STD Saturday PM 04-Mar-00 13:48 3 000304 P3 ARS1 STD Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
