                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 12
                       13-March-00 through 18-Mar-00 


GENERAL 

Baseline solar activity started and ended the week above C-level, but 
was below C-level for most of the week. Activity was dominated by AR 8906, 
which produced two M1.3 flares (one of which was observed by SXT) and an 
additional seven flares of level C.6 and above. 

SXT TECHNICAL 

SXT functioned properly, no new problems to report.

The nugget this week discusses flare data taken during Max Millennium 
Campaign #6. The flares were interestingly compact, `simple' and non-eruptive.

CAMPAIGNS 

This week Yohkoh SXT supported Max Millenium campaign #6, which is a joint 
campaign with the IVM on Hawai'i, BBSO and TRACE, with the primary goal of 
making a confident identification of an H alpha line polarization signature 
during a solar flare. The campaign will continue throughout next week.

The planned operations for Week 13 involve co-ordinated observations 
with TRACE/CDS/GBOs for Max Millenium Campaign #6. For this campaign, 
a special flare table  will be used. We may include a few orbits of PFI 
dominant exposures on Wednesday.

example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
