March 17, 2000 L. Fletcher CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 12 13-March-00 through 18-Mar-00 GENERAL Baseline solar activity started and ended the week above C-level, but was below C-level for most of the week. Activity was dominated by AR 8906, which produced two M1.3 flares (one of which was observed by SXT) and an additional seven flares of level C.6 and above. SXT TECHNICAL SXT functioned properly, no new problems to report. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000317.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html The nugget this week discusses flare data taken during Max Millennium Campaign #6. The flares were interestingly compact, `simple' and non-eruptive. CAMPAIGNS This week Yohkoh SXT supported Max Millenium campaign #6, which is a joint campaign with the IVM on Hawai'i, BBSO and TRACE, with the primary goal of making a confident identification of an H alpha line polarization signature during a solar flare. The campaign will continue throughout next week. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Hugh Hudson returned from DC and Nariaki Nitta arrived from Palo Alto. SEMINARS 'Non-coronagraph observations of CMEs' - Hugh Hudson SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 13 (20-Mar-00 - 25-Mar-00) The planned operations for Week 13 involve co-ordinated observations with TRACE/CDS/GBOs for Max Millenium Campaign #6. For this campaign, a special flare table will be used. We may include a few orbits of PFI dominant exposures on Wednesday. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 20-MAR-00 08:06 4 000320 P4 ARS2 DARK+MM6 Tuesday PM 21-MAR-00 06:34 4 000321 P4 ARS2 DIFF+MM6 Wednesday PM 22-MAR-00 03:19 2 000322 P2 ARS2 MM6 Wednesday PM 22-MAR-00 06:44 4 000322 P4 ARS2 MM6 Thursday PM 23-MAR-00 05:12 3 000323 P3 ARS2 MM6 Friday AM 24-MAR-00 01:58 2 000324 P2 ARS2 MM6 Saturday AM 25-MAR-00 02:08 2 000325 P2 ARS1 STD Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
