                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 13
                       20-March-00 through 26-Mar-00 


GENERAL 

The Max Millennium Campaign #6 continued.  We stayed on AR 8910, which
was central in rather high solar activity, and produced many flares.
Among them were two X-class events.  Yohkoh missed both of them, 
unfortunately, because of spacecraft night.  


SXT TECHNICAL 

SXT functioned properly, no new problems to report.  Excellent coverage of
straylight images was obtained before we updated the normal pointing on 
23-Mar-00.

The nugget this week discusses the difficulty of flare prediction using 
existing X-ray and EUV data.  

CAMPAIGNS 

This week Yohkoh SXT continued to support Max Millennium campaign #6, whose
primary goal was to make a confident identification of an H alpha line 
polarization signature during a solar flare.

PERSONNEL

Lyndsay Fletcher returned to Palo Alto.  Hugh Hudson left for the US 
to attend an ISTP meeting.


SEMINARS

There was a Yohkoh seminar on 23 March, given by Lyndsay Fletcher.  The
title was: ``Evidence for Fan and Spine Reconnection in Solar Flares''

will start on 1 April for JOP 83 (Sarah Matthews) and VLA (Nat

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
