April 3, 2000 H. S. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 14 27-March-00 through 2-April-00 GENERAL Yohkoh commenced support of VLA observations and of JOP083. Prior to these campaigns, activity shot upwards - 9 M flares in 2 days - and then shot downwards just as fast. SXT TECHNICAL SXT functioned properly, no new problems to report. For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000331.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget tackles the difficult problem of explaining DEM to Joe Sixpack. But Loren provided a beautiful frontispiece. CAMPAIGNS The campaign now completed (Max Millennium #6) must have been extremely successful. We hope to see coordinated observations of tiny rapid emissions in the lower solar atmosphere from several flares. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Nariaki Nitta returned to Palo Alto. But he was replaced by senior heavyweights: Loren Acton and Hugh Hudson. SEMINARS No seminar this week. None next week because of the ASJ. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 15 (2-Apr-00 - 8-Apr-00) We will coordinate with JOP 83 to observe clear loops in active regions and with VLA to try to detect radio signatures of EIT waves. The target for the former should be given by the SoHO team (Sarah Matthews), and the FFI sequence will be optimized for the latter (leader: Nat Gopalswamy). ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 2-APR-00 22:36 1 000402 P1 ARS2 VLA+JOP83* Tuesday AM 3-APR-00 21:04 4 000403 P4 ARS2 JOP83+DK* Wednesday AM 4-APR-00 19:33 1 000404 P1 ARS2 JOP83+DF* Wednesday AM 5-APR-00 00:39 4 000404 P4 ARS2 JOP83* Thursday AM 5-APR-00 21:25 3 000405 P3 ARS2 JOP83* Friday AM 6-APR-00 23:27 4 000406 P4 ARS2 JOP83* Saturday AM 7-APR-00 21:45 4 000407 P4 ARS1 VLA* * The ID reflects the UT date of the first pass. This table plan is likely to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
