                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 17
                     24-April-00 through 30-April-00


GENERAL 

Yohkoh supported JOP083 (microflares) and an ad-hoc effort at JOP119 
(trans-equatorial loops).  Flare activity was low (no M flares), 
although the background GOES level approached C.

SXT TECHNICAL 

SXT functioned properly. We lost one day's data due to a communications
problem leading to a table upload concern. The CO manual has been updated
to make this less likely in the future.

This week's nugget describes a major 1998 flare with interesting ejective
properties that's been made part of a key interval by the geophysicists.
Somehow this missed the attention of alert Chief Observers of that era.

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
