22 May, 2000 B. Handy, N. Nitta CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 22 15-May through 21-May-00 GENERAL Baseline solar activity, according to GOES, was nearly constant during most of the week after a big increase over the past week - it appears to be tapering slightly in the weekend. Several M-class flares occured, the biggest of which happened outside of visible contacts - its onset was unfortunately during spacecraft night. Three warnings of CMEs arrived from Mauna Loa. One of them probably corresponded to a small but dandy event on May 17, as recorded nicely by SXT. SXT TECHNICAL SXT functioned properly. There were no apparent problems this week. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/000519.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget follows up on the April 28 nugget from a few weeks ago, where we pondered out loud how long the Yohkoh orbit might last. A determination has been made (unofficial, as all good orbital predictions are) that odds are reasonably good Yohkoh will make it a full solar cycle. CAMPAIGNS There are no scheduled campaigns. CMEs or TILs will be the target of opportunity this week. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Brian Handy, Hugh Hudson, and Greg Slater Departed. Nariaki Nitta took the conn. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. This week: TBD. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 22 (21-May-00 - 27-May-00) Campaigns: None scheduled at present. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 22-MAY-00 01:35 4 000521 P4 ARS1 DIFF* Tuesday AM 23-MAY-00 00:01 4 000522 P4 ARS1 DARK* Wednesday AM 23-MAY-00 19:04 1 000523 P1 ARS2 CME* --- Wednesday AM 24-MAY-00 00:10 4 000524 P4 ARS1 STD Thursday AM 24-MAY-00 19:12 1 000524 P1 ARS2 CME* --- Thursday AM 25-MAY-00 00:20 4 000524 P4 ARS1 STD Friday AM 25-MAY-00 17:40 1 000525 P1 ARS2 CME* --- Friday AM 25-MAY-00 22:46 4 000525 P4 ARS1 STD* Saturday AM 26-MAY-00 17:48 1 000526 P1 ARS2 CME* --- Saturday AM 26-MAY-00 22:55 4 000526 P4 ARS1 STD* Sunday AM 27-MAY-00 16:16 1 000527 P1 ARS2 CME* --- Sunday AM 27-MAY-00 21:21 4 000527 P4 ARS1 STD* Those followed by "---" are still highly tentative at the moment, and each of them may change the ID or even be dropped completely, so we request that the tohbans be continuously on the lookout for the table FAX and e-mail. (* signifies that the UT and JST dates don't match on pass 1) Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
