                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 22
                       15-May through 21-May-00


GENERAL 

Baseline solar activity, according to GOES, was nearly constant during 
most of the week after a big increase over the past week - it appears to 
be tapering slightly in the weekend.   Several M-class flares occured, 
the biggest of which happened outside of visible contacts - its onset
was unfortunately during spacecraft night.  Three warnings of CMEs 
arrived from Mauna Loa.  One of them probably corresponded to a small but 
dandy event on May 17, as recorded nicely by SXT.

SXT TECHNICAL 

SXT functioned properly.  There were no apparent problems this week.

This week's nugget follows up on the April 28 nugget from a few weeks ago, 
where we pondered out loud how long the Yohkoh orbit might last.  A
determination has been made (unofficial, as all good orbital predictions 
are) that odds are reasonably good Yohkoh will make it a full solar cycle.

CAMPAIGNS 

There are no scheduled campaigns.  CMEs or TILs will be the target of 
opportunity this week.

Continuing requests:

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
