                   CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 24
                       5-Jun-00 through 11-Jun-00


GENERAL 

Solar activity increased as AR 9026 rotated onto the disk,
and as we all know there were three X-class flares. Yohkoh
got excellent observations of only one (June 7) but observed
the consequences (a beautiful and curiously robust cusp).

SXT TECHNICAL 

SXT worked fine without apparent problems this week.  We finally
got the normal pointing repaired, after two mistakes.

This week's nugget shows off the June 6 cusp and asks why the
June 7 flare did not dislodge it.

CAMPAIGNS 

The TRACE-La Palma observations continued. We are not officially
supporting this campaign, but of course we've all been looking 
mainly at AR 9026. They probably got observations of all three
X-class flares.

Reflects the possibility of a Crab Nebula observing plan on
Thursday, June 14. The La Palma observations continue, so we
will try to adhere to TRACE/La Palma targets as the situation
permits.

Note: if the Crab observation does not happen, we will probably
insert more table uploads to take advantage of the improved KSC
coverage and the La Palma targets. 

Continuing requests:

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
