17-July, 2000 B. Handy, H. Hudson CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 29 10-Jul-00 through 16-Jul-00 GENERAL Activity settled in at the mid- to high-C level with numerous M-class flares and a couple of X-class flares, including the largest flare in 6+ years from AR #9077 (X 5.7). Pat McIntosh labeled this the "Super Active Region" just as it came over the limb, and his precitions have thus far held true. SXT TECHNICAL SXT worked fine without apparent problems this week. No campaigns are planned for this week. The planned CCD bakeout will probably be postponed for yet another week unless activity calms down. There are two problems, likely to be discussed at the WOM: - We're having difficulties reformatting data outside of the visible contacts right now. We had hopes of working on this issue on Sunday, then realized that the mainframe was turned off, per standard operating procedures. We'd like to learn more about the mainframe. - The July 11 flare was uniquely timed to start shortly after coming out of s/c night, during an invisible orbit. However, we've lost the chunk of data during the impulsive phase, so there's no HXT data to speak of for this event. Joe Khan ruminates that this is because part of the flare data from early in the orbit was overwritten. We will bring visual aids. There's still interest in doing a CCD bake, but only if activity subsides from the present level. This may wait until Week 00_31 after the super regions subside. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 16-JUL-00 20:02 3 000716 P3 ARS1 DARK* Tuesday AM 17-JUL-00 18:28 2 000717 P2 ARS1 DIFF* Tuesday AM 17-JUL-00 21:52 4 000717 P4 ARS1 STD* Wednesday AM 18-JUL-00 20:18 3 000718 P3 ARS1 STD* Thursday AM 19-JUL-00 18:44 3 000719 P3 ARS1 STD* Friday AM 20-JUL-00 17:09 2 000720 P2 ARS1 STD* Saturday AM 21-JUL-00 18:59 3 000721 P3 ARS1 STD* Sunday AM 22-JUL-00 15:43 2 000722 P2 ARS1 STD* * The ID reflects the UT date of the first pass. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
