CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 36 27-Aug-00 through 3-Sep-00 L. Fletcher, H. Hudson, A. Takeda GENERAL Activity remains low - the "major" flare of the week was a C9.1 on September 1. The special flare mode we are running, which emphasizes long-exposure full-resolution 2x2 images, did not show any ejecta in spite of reports of Type II and Type III bursts. SXT TECHNICAL SXT had no technical problems this week. A new normal pointing should be carried out on Monday, Sep. 4. The new FFI table seems to work quite well and we propose to leave it in - recall that this provides sets of six AlMg SFD-type images at two-minute cadence. It seems to show faint coronal phenomena much better than the old standard. The special flare table has now caught about three events, two ejective. The event of August 25 turned out to meet the campaign aims spectacularly well - TRACE detected oscillations, and Yohkoh detected a nice ejection that matched a decimeter Type IV event well. We will probably continue the rapid FFI and deep flare-mode tables for this week. We expect a flare during the rocket flight, because Golub claims to be invariably successful in catching flares with rocket launches. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 03-SEP-00 22:56 4 000903 P4 ARS1 DARK* Tuesday AM 04-SEP-00 16:17 1 000904 P1 ARS1 DIFF* Tuesday AM 04-SEP-00 19:39 3 000904 P3 ARS1 TXI* Wednesday AM 05-SEP-00 16:23 1 000905 P1 ARS1 TXI* Thursday AM 06-SEP-00 16:29 1 000906 P1 ARS1 TXI* Thursday AM 06-SEP-00 19:53 3 000906 P3 ARS1 STD* Friday AM 07-SEP-00 16:36 2 000907 P2 ARS1 STD* Saturday AM 08-SEP-00 16:43 2 000908 P2 ARS1 STD* Sunday AM 09-SEP-00 16:50 2 000908 P2 ARS1 STD* * The ID reflects the UT date of the first pass. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
