CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 48 20-Nov-00 through 26-Nov-00 H. Hudson, A. Takeda GENERAL Solar activity increased spectacularly this week. As of Monday afternoon, the Sun had produced five X-class flares, all of them from AR 9236 near disk center (but there was an M8 from AR9240, thus confounding those who claim that two regions cannot make major flares at the same time). The X-class flares were all compact, impulsive, and associated with halo CMEs. Yohkoh apparently has good coverage for all but the first, and from that one an interesting and possibly new form of dimming appeared in the before-and-after difference images. This region is now the target of the continuing MEOC campaign. SXT TECHNICAL No new problems this week. Pointing and roll appeared to remain stable. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/001124.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget describes the first of the X-flares, or at least its dimming signature. CAMPAIGNS The MEOC campaign, looking for EIT-type waves, will continue until 8-Dec. The ASP campaign of Shimizu, Kubo, and Lites ended 22-Nov. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL H. Hudson departed for a week. G. Slater arrived, and we hope his new computers will show up soon. SEMINARS H. This means that we continue the faster-cadence FFIs in hope of spotting a wave. There are two table uploads planned for Tuesday. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 27-NOV-00 02:43 2 001127 P2 ARS1 MEOC Tuesday AM 27-NOV-00 23:26 1 001127 P1 ARS1 DARK* Tuesday PM 28-NOV-00 04:30 4 001127 P4 ARS1 MEOC* Wednesday AM 29-NOV-00 01:10 2 001128 P2 ARS1 DIFF* Thursday AM 30-NOV-00 02:57 3 001129 P3 ARS1 MEOC* Friday AM 1-DEC-00 01:19 3 001130 P3 ARS1 MEOC* Saturday AM 1-DEC-00 23:42 2 001201 P2 ARS1 STD* A '*' means that the UT date of pass 1 differs from the JST date of the pass in question This table plan is subject to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
