CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 52 18-Dec-00 through 24-Dec-00 TAKEDA A. GENERAL Solar activity is low for these few weeks. No M-class flare was reported for this week, although the GOES background was a little above the C-level on the avarage. SXT TECHNICAL No serious problem found this week. On 18-Dec, we had three runs of the flare-mode, which correspond to the following GOES events; C7.0, C3.2, and C2.7, respectively. The latter two events were not during the SAA passage of S/C, and thus rather weak than getting into the flare-mode, which, at present, set to be triggered by the flux larger than 255cnt/s on WBS/SXS. We do not yet figure out this anomaly clearly, but SXT has resumed its proper flare observation after 19-Dec. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/001222.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget(by NVN) gives a good review of the gorgeous splurge of X-flares, we met with in the late november. CAMPAIGNS A Max Millennium campaign, "Eruptive Flares Associated with Sigmoids" is now in progress. We are on alert for fat sigmoids. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL G. Slater left on 23th and will come back in mid-January. SEMINARS No seminar this week. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to heavy snowfall) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
