CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 9 26-Feb-01 through 04-Mar-01 N. Nitta GENERAL Low solar activity continues without M-class or X-class flares. SXT TECHNICAL On 1 March, the on-board data processor had an error (SEU?), but it was about an hour before an error flag was set by the SXT on-board computer. Some images had wrong exposure times. The detailed sequence of the anomaly is being investigated. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010302.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html The newest nugget, "The temperature of active region loops", gives an attempt to use images in four filters to characterize the corona in terms of two-temperature distributions. This should be an on-going effort. CAMPAIGNS We made an unsolicited participation in JOP 137 to observe AR 9537, and also observed the target of JOP 138 (to understand metric noise storms). For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL H. Hudson came back over the weekend, but will be gone again a week later. Visitor S. Kahler arrived. He will be here until the end of April, primarily to work on the coronal hole boundaries. SEMINARS No seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 10 (04-Mar-01 through 10-Mar-01) We continue to participate in JOP 137 (AR dynamics with CDS, SUMER and TRACE) and JOP 138 (noise storms with the VLA). ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 5-MAR-01 05:36 4 010305 P4 ARS2 VLA Tuesday AM 6-MAR-01 00:34 1 010306 P1 ARS0 DARK137 Tuesday PM 6-MAR-01 05:39 4 010306 P4 ARS0 DIF+137 Wednesday AM 7-MAR-01 00:36 2 010306 P2 ARS0 JOP137* Thursday AM 7-MAR-01 22:59 1 010307 P1 ARS1 STD* Thursday AM 8-MAR-01 02:20 3 010307 P3 ARS2 VLA* Friday AM 9-MAR-01 00:41 2 010308 P2 ARS0 JOP137* Saturday AM 10-MAR-01 00:44 2 010309 P2 ARS1 STD* The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
