CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 13 26-Mar-01 through 1-Apr-01 A. Takeda, H. Hudson GENERAL Since a naked-eye sunspot, AR9393, has made its disk passage, the flare activity has been quite high during the week. SXT has observed many flares produced around this region, including the singular X-class flare of March 29 (see below). SXT TECHNICAL No problems to report. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010330.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html The newest nugget, 'Aurora seen in Palo Alto', deals with the flare. In fact auroras were reputedly seen as far south as northern Mexico. The nugget reminds us that this kind of geoeffectiveness can originate with a compact, impulsive flare sometimes, CAMPAIGNS We planed to participate in the Quiet Sun Camapign, on 28th and 29th March to cooperated with SoHO/CDS, etc. However, due to the high solar activity on those days, we canceled the special table to observe the quiet region with ARS0 mode. Instead, we concentrated on the gorgeous active region, AR9393. We remain on the alert for sigmoids as a Target Of Oportunity. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL H. Hudson returned on 29th March, shortly before the flare. SEMINARS No seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 14 (1-Apr-01 through 8-Apr-01) The CME watch campaign is scheduled from 5th to 20th April, but the details have not been discussed yet. Otherwise the operations will be quite normal waiting for the appearance of a nice sigmoid as TOO. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Tuesday AM 2-APR-01 15:25 3 010402 P3 ARS1 STD* Tuesday PM 3-APR-01 12:03 2 010403 P2 ARS1 DARK Wednesday AM 3-APR-01 15:27 4 010403 P4 ARS1 DIFF* Wednesday PM 4-APR-01 13:47 3 010404 P3 ARS1 STD Thursday PM 5-APR-01 10:25 1 010405 P1 ARS1 STD+CME Friday PM 6-APR-01 12:08 3 010406 P3 ARS1 STD+CME Saturday PM 7-APR-01 12:10 3 010407 P3 ARS1 STD+CME The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
