CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 16 16-Apr-01 through 22-Apr-01 H. Hudson, A. Takeda GENERAL Major activity in this week came from AR 9415 and AR 9433. The former kept its flare productivity high for a few days after having gone behind the west limb on last Sunday. The latter has just begun to go though its second rotation after the X20 flare. The flare observed on 18th is thought to come from AR 9415 located behind the limb at that time and was acompanied by a strong proton event. Although the soft X-ray flux was so small(C2.2 with GOES) that the SXT failed to point at the flare kernel, we could get good series of HXT images as described in this week's science nugget. SXT TECHNICAL We have fixed the special flare table for detecting the wave during the week. To keep high time cadence with a 2x2 FOV, the sequence is simplified as follows. The table worked properly and yielded 280sec-cadence of nearly whole sun images in QT/H mode, as you find in the address : http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/5by7_PFI.gif. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010420.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget, "A major event after the region rotated off the west limb" (by NVN et al.) presents a quick report of the event we met with on 18th. One interest thing to report is that the EIT dimming associated with the flare corresponds to the SXT brightening! CAMPAIGNS We remain on the alert for sigmoids as a Target Of Opportunity. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No changes. SEMINARS None this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 17 (23-Apr-01 through 29-Apr-01) There are no scheduled campaigns, but we are keeping the target-of-opportunity sigmoid campaign still in the background. We will continue to run the special flare table for waves. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 23-APR-01 03:56 3 010423 P3 ARS1 STD W Tuesday AM 24-APR-01 00:34 1 010424 P1 ARS1 W DRK Tuesday PM 24-APR-01 05:39 4 010424 P4 ARS1 STD W Wednesday AM 25-APR-01 00:34 1 010425 P1 ARS1 W DIF Wednesday PM 25-APR-01 05:40 4 010425 P4 ARS1 STD W Thursday AM 26-APR-01 00:35 2 010426 P2 ARS1 STD W Friday AM 27-APR-01 02:17 3 010427 P3 ARS1 STD W Saturday AM 28-APR-01 00:36 2 010428 P2 ARS1 STD W The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
