CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 17 23-Apr-01 through 29-Apr-01 H. Hudson, A. Takeda GENERAL No X-class flares, but ten M-class flares, mostly from AR 9433. This week's wonderful event was the "slow LDE" of April 26, which included an impulsive component at the almost-X level of M7.8. This event featured a sigmoid dimming and a Bastille-like arcade, and we will probably do next week's science nugget on this. SXT TECHNICAL The special flare table (2x2) has settled down after some refinement. We now have four AlMg images, including one at FR with standard AEC, plus a Be image FR at standard AEC. We have already seen some nice things with these tables and will probably continue with them until HESSI is launched. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010427.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget takes a break from big flares and discusses transient coronal holes, CAMPAIGNS We jointly observed with the VLA and Nancay as a part of JOP140. We remain on the alert for sigmoids as a Target Of Opportunity. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Visitor S. Kahler departed. SEMINARS None this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 18 (30-Apr-01 through 5-May-01) JOP 140 may continue to run, but we don't know the schedule. We will continue to run the special flare table for waves. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 30-APR-01 00:36 3 010429 P3 ARS1 STD W* Tuesday AM 30-APR-01 21:14 1 010430 P1 ARS1 DAR W Tuesday PM 1-MAY-01 02:19 4 010430 P4 ARS1 STD W* Wednesday AM 1-MAY-01 22:55 2 010501 P2 ARS1 DIF W Wednesday PM 2-MAY-01 02:19 4 010501 P4 ARS1 STD W* Thursday AM 2-MAY-01 21:15 2 010502 P2 ARS1 STD W Friday AM 3-MAY-01 21:15 2 010503 P2 ARS1 STD W Saturday AM 5-MAY-01 00:39 4 010504 P4 ARS1 STD W* The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
