CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 21 21-May-01 through 27-May-01 N. Nitta GENERAL Solar activity was not necessarily high in terms of flares, but there were nice large-scale changes in the northern hemisphere, involving backside regions. SXT TECHNICAL No new problems. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010525.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget asks if there are two kinds of CMEs, as suggested by Sheeley et al., and points out that fast ones are correlated with impulsive flares. CAMPAIGNS We continued to coordinate with MEDOC campaign, which aimed at flare abundances, but the Sun was not cooperative. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL A. Takeda left for Boston. SEMINARS No seminar for this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 22 (27-May-01 through 2-Jun-01) We do minimal operations this week, since no SXT CO is present at ISAS for the SPD/AGU meeting in Boston. We will leave 5 pre-edited tables at the SXTSPT upload table area. We ask that the KSC tohbans transfer all of the following tables but the first one. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 28-MAY-01 12:53 4 010528 P4 ARS1 DRK W Tuesday PM 29-MAY-01 09:29 2 010529 P2 ARS1 STD W Thursday PM 31-MAY-01 11:11 4 010531 P4 ARS1 DIF W Friday PM 1-Jun-01 07:47 2 010601 P2 ARS1 STD W Saturday PM 2-Jun-01 09:29 3 010602 P3 ARS1 STD W The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. This table plan is likely to change. Prepare for last minute changes. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
