CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 25 17-Jun-01 through 23-Jun-01 D. McKenzie GENERAL Solar activity was higher this week, with 4 M-class and 1 X-class flare. Most of these flares occurred on Saturday (JST), but the X-ray background stayed above GOES C level for almost the entire week. The highlight was the solar eclipse on Thursday, in which SXT observed two partial eclipses. SXT TECHNICAL After testing and refining the HESSI-support flare table last week, we shelved it this week; we have returned to a flare table designed for observing ejecta, waves, and inflows. We also returned the FFI table to an equal balance between AL.1 and ALMG images. Pointing was very steady this week. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010622.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget shows -- what else? -- the solar eclipse of June 21. CAMPAIGNS No coordinated campaigns are planned for this week. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No personnel changes this week. SEMINARS The seminar this week was given by Hugh Hudson, regarding a far-behind-the-limb flare from April 18, 2001. Nobeyama and HXT both tracked moving sources with speeds near 950 km/s. Are they the same source? SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 26 (25-Jun-01 through 30-Jun-01) The table this week is standard, there are no coordinated campaigns. There will be two table uploads on Tuesday and on Wednesday. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 24-JUN-01 21:34 3 010624 P3 ARS1 STD * Tuesday AM 25-JUN-01 18:12 1 010625 P1 ARS1 DRK * Tuesday AM 25-JUN-01 23:15 4 010625 P4 ARS1 STD * Wednesday AM 26-JUN-01 18:11 1 010626 P1 ARS1 DIF * Wednesday AM 26-JUN-01 23:15 4 010626 P4 ARS1 STD * Thursday AM 27-JUN-01 21:33 3 010627 P3 ARS1 STD * Friday AM 28-Jun-01 18:10 2 010628 P2 ARS1 STD * Saturday AM 29-Jun-01 18:09 2 010629 P2 ARS1 STD * The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
