CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 28 09-Jul-01 through 15-Jul-01 A. Takeda GENERAL Solar activity based on the GOES flux level was not high during the weekdays. With SXT, however, we observed large flaring structures on the NE- and SW- limbs on 11th and 12th, respectively. They appear to be associate with the remarkable CMEs observed with LASCO on those days. Late in the week, new region, AR 9539, has developed significantly and produced a few flares including an M1.0 on 14th. SXT TECHNICAL No new problems to report. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010713.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html In this week's Nugget, "Bastille Day throughout history", we look back some events on the sun, observed on the past Bastille Days. CAMPAIGNS JOP 100, "Active Region DEM for Heating & Magnetography Studies", ran on 12 and 15 July. SXT supported the former observing AR 9535 in the ARS2 (fixed-region) mode. For the latter, unfortunately, we couldn't cooperate, because it was during the weekend and the targets were not bright enough. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL D. McKenzie left on 10th. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 29 (16-Jul-01 through 22-Jul-01) In addition to the JOP 100 started last week, we will support another CDS campaign lead by K. Hori of MSSL. Both campaigns may require ARS2 or ARS0, depending on choice of target. There will be two table uploads on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 16-Jul-01 11:14 3 010716 P3 ARS2 STD+VELAR Tuesday PM 17-Jul-01 07:51 1 010717 P1 ARS1 DARK Tuesday PM 17-Jul-01 12:55 4 010717 P4 ARS2 STD+J100+VELAR Wednesday PM 18-Jul-01 07:50 1 010718 P1 ARS1 DIFF Wednesday PM 18-Jul-01 12:55 4 010718 P4 ARS2 STD+VELAR Thursday PM 19-Jul-01 07:49 2 010719 P2 ARS2 STD+J100+VELAR Friday PM 20-Jul-01 07:48 2 010720 P2 ARS2 STD+VELAR Saturday PM 21-Jul-01 07:48 2 010721 P2 ARS1 STD This table plan is likely to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
