CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 29 16-Jul-01 through 22-Jul-01 A. Takeda GENERAL The solar activity was moderate during the week. Major flares were brought by ARs 9537 and 9539; each produced an M-class flare. Unfortunately, their observations with Yohkoh were blocked by S/C nights and SAA passages. SXT TECHNICAL No new problem to report. SXT normal pointing was updated on 21-Jul., at pass number 010721-0619. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010720.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html In this week's Nugget, a team of image providers (Bastian, McKenzie, and Nitta) fed a ghost writer (Hudson) with non-coronagraphic images of 3-part structure in CMEs. There seems to be something fundamental in this morphology. CAMPAIGNS Through the week, we cooperated with the CDS (VelAR) campaign to study Inter-Connecting Loops between active regions. An active-region pair, 9537/9539 was our main target, for which there were some good ICLs. These regions caused eruptions a few times. We also supported JOP 100 for two runs scheduled on the 17th and 19th. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL Hudson arrived. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 30 (23-Jul-01 through 29-Jul-01) The last run of the JOP 100 campaign is scheduled on Monday. No other campaign is planned for this week. There will be two table uploads on Tuesday afternoon. We plan to carry out a one-day bakeout of the SXT CCD on Thursday. Detailed instructions will be given to the tohbans later in the week. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 23-Jul-01 07:47 3 010723 P3 ARS2 STD+J100 Tuesday PM 24-Jul-01 04:24 1 010724 P1 ARS1 DIFF Tuesday PM 24-Jul-01 07:46 3 010724 P4 ARS1 STD Wednesday PM 25-Jul-01 07:45 3 010725 P3 ARS1 DARK Thursday PM 26-Jul-01 04:22 1 010726 P1 ARS1 BAKE Friday PM 27-Jul-01 04:21 2 010727 P2 ARS1 STD Saturday PM 28-Jul-01 04:21 2 010728 P2 ARS1 STD This table plan is likely to change. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this. It should change rapidly when the TEC and heater commands are issued, and can be monitored via the real-time displays at KSC. The CO will work with the reformatted data and confirm that things are OK, and perhaps write a Yohkoh science nugget on what it all means.
