CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 33 13-Aug-01 through 19-Aug-01 A. Takeda GENERAL Solar activity has declined compared with the previous week. No strong active regions were on the near side of the solar disk, and reported flares were all less than M-class. However, there was a significant proton event on 15th Aug., and it turned out that it had probably come from an active region on the far side of the disk. SXT TECHNICAL No problems for the S/C. On the contrary, we still have had trouble with the operation supporting system at Kagoshima Space Center since last week. We were forced to cancel the SXT tables until Saturday. We could manage the weekly dark calibration, but no diffuser images were obtained. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010817.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget, "Yohkoh observations of X-class flares", reviews the properties of X-class flares as observed by Yohkoh since 1996. CAMPAIGNS No official campaigns. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No change. SEMINARS No seminar this week SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 34 (20-Aug-01 through 26-Aug-01) A joint observations for the quiet sun study are planned between BBSO and CDS for this week. Details are not informed yet, but we will support it, as long as possible. At present, we plan to keep standard ARS1 pointing mode, but may request additional tables with ARS0/2 pointing for the campaign. On Wednesday, we plan to upload a special table for testing the straylight level. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 19-Aug-01 17:50 2 010819 P2 ARS1 STD* Tuesday AM 20-Aug-01 16:08 2 010820 P2 ARS1 STD* <-- cancelled Tuesday PM 21-Aug-01 14:26 1 010821 P1 ARS1 SL-TEST <-- change ID Wednesday AM 21-Aug-01 17:48 3 010821 P3 ARS0 QS* <-- change ID Wednesday AM 21-Aug-01 19:30 4 010821 P4 ARS1 STD* <-- added Wednesday PM 22-Aug-01 14:24 1 010822 P1 ARS1 DIFF <-- change ID Thursday AM 22-Aug-01 19:29 4 010822 P4 ARS1 STD+SL* <-- change ID Thursday PM 23-Aug-01 12:43 1 010823 P1 ARS1 DARK Friday AM 23-Aug-01 16:04 3 010823 P3 ARS1 STD* Saturday AM 24-Aug-01 16:03 3 010824 P3 ARS1 STD* Saturday PM 25-Aug-01 14:20 2 010825 P2 ARS1 STD The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
