CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 34 20-Aug-01 through 26-Aug-01 A. Takeda GENERAL Solar activity has significantly increased since the appearance of NOAA 9591, which produced an X5.3 flare on 25th Aug. This region is the return of 9557, the suspected source of the proton event from the backside of the Sun recorded on the 16th, and the subsequent geomagnetic storm on the 17th. SXT TECHNICAL No new problem with the S/C. In contrast, we still had trouble with the operation supporting system at the Kagoshima Space Center, but finally it has been recovered during this weekend. SXT normal pointing was updated on 20th Aug. We carried out a special calibration to test the straylight pattern on one of the filters. The special tables were uploaded on 21st and 22nd and the images obtained are being reviewed by L. Acton. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010824.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget, "Reverberations of April 7, 1997", is the re-consideration of a sigmoid flare and an associated radio event observed in 1997. CAMPAIGNS We supported the "Quiet Sun Campaign" lead by BBSO and CDS. We tried 2-step deeper exposures than normal FFIs on the 20th and high cadence PFIs in ARS0 pointing on the 21st. The support was until the AR 9591 returned and showed strong flare activity. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No change. SEMINARS No seminar this week SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 35 (27-Aug-01 through 2-Sep-01) The hard X-ray spectrometor will be launched by balloon on 28th Aug., and we plan a coordinated observation during the balloon flight. There will be two tables uploaded on Tuesday and Wednesday. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 27-Aug-01 12:37 2 010827 P2 ARS1 BAL Tuesday PM 28-Aug-01 10:55 1 010828 P1 ARS1 DIFF Wednesday AM 28-Aug-01 15:58 4 010828 P4 ARS1 STD* Wednesday PM 29-Aug-01 10:53 1 010829 P1 ARS1 DARK Thursday AM 29-Aug-01 15:57 4 010829 P4 ARS1 STD* Thursday PM 30-Aug-01 12:33 2 010830 P2 ARS1 STD Friday PM 31-Aug-01 12:32 2 010831 P2 ARS1 STD Saturday PM 1-Sep-01 12:30 3 010901 P3 ARS1 STD The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
