CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 35

GENERAL 

Solar activity remained high, although the GOES background has been gradually 
declining since the middle of the week. NOAA 9591 and the 9600/9601 complex
were the major sources of the flare activity.

SXT TECHNICAL 

No new problems to report. The operation supporting system at Kagoshima 
station was fully restored and has resumed normal operations.

This week's nugget, "Millimeter waves, white light, and gamma rays" presents
the images and/or light curves during the X5.3 event on 25th August obtained 
in different wavelength ranges, including Yohkoh/GRS1, HXT, and SXT.  

CAMPAIGNS 

We made support observation for the balloon experiment (flying HX spectrometor,
lead by a NAOJ and ISAS team) during the period between 23UT on the 28th and 
2UT on the 29th. Although no major flares occurred during the flight, their 
instruments worked perfectly to get valuable data.

H. Hudson came back on 1st Sep., thus he will become the SXT_CO this coming week.

Continuing requests:

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any 
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
