CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 37 10-Sep-01 through 16-Sep-01 L. Fletcher GENERAL Solar activity was moderately high, with the baseline flux being elevated by a large and complex group of active regions (9607, 9608, 9610, 9618) which transitted during the week, and were also remarkably far south. There were 5 M-class flares, the highest being M4.5 SXT TECHNICAL No new problems to report. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010914.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget reports on a cusp inside a cusp which was seen this week and discusses other instances of this configuration and their possible interpretation CAMPAIGNS We supported JOP 146, which aims to determine `once and for all' the temperature structure in simple bipolar loops, using TRACE, CDS and SXT data. It took us a day or two to work out the optimum program, but settled on alternating cycles of 3 PFIs, one cycle exposed for the fainter loops and the other for the AR core. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL L. Fletcher arrived from Glasgow for 4 weeks. SEMINARS No seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 38 (17-Sep-01 through 22-Sep-01) We will be supporting JOP146 beginning on Tuesday. We expect two uploads per day because of this, although this may not be necessary depending on the region chosen by the campaign co-ordinator. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 17-SEP-01 05:18 3 010917 P3 ARS1 DARK Tuesday AM 18-SEP-01 00:13 1 010918 P1 ARS0 JDFF Tuesday PM 18-SEP-01 05:16 4 010918 P4 ARS1 STD Wednesday AM 19-SEP-01 00:10 1 010919 P1 ARS0 J146 Wednesday PM 19-SEP-01 03:32 3 010919 P3 ARS1 STD Thursday AM 20-SEP-01 00:07 1 010920 P1 ARSO J146 Thursday PM 20-SEP-01 05:12 4 010920 P4 ARS1 STD Friday AM 21-SEP-01 00:05 1 010921 P1 ARS0 J146 Friday PM 21-SEP-01 05:10 4 010921 P4 ARS1 STD Saturday AM 22-SEP-01 02:44 3 010922 P3 ARS1 STD* The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
