CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 38 17-Sep-01 through 23-Sep-01 L. Fletcher GENERAL Solar activity was high, with the baseline flux hovering just below C2 level. There were 9 M class flares, mostly M1 class, but with one M8.1 SXT TECHNICAL There was a pointing anomaly reported during flare mode on 17-Sep-01. Flare pointing was not centred on the brightest pixel. Senior COs are scratching their heads about this, but so far no other example has been reported since, despite many flares. We suspect that because it was a small flare, the patrol image was faint, and ARS might have been confused by a CR hit for example. For a report see http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/scratch/anomaly.html SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010921.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget discusses some results from `Whole Sun Month 3' run during August of 1999. These observations were of the evolution of a sigmoidal active region. SXT and H alpha observations are presented, and a possible evolutionary scenario discussed. CAMPAIGNS We were scheduled to support JOP 146, but because of two instances of flares taking place we could not upload tables on the first day, while on the following days there was no suitable target so the JOP was cancelled. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL G. Slater returned to Lockheed. SEMINARS The seminar this week was by Boris Somov. "Collisionless 3D Reconnection in the Structure and Dynamics of Solar Active Regions" SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 39 (24-Sep-01 through 29-Sep-01) We are not participating in any campaigns, so no special support tables are planned for this week _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 23-SEP-01 23:58 2 010923 P2 ARS1 DFF* Monday AM 24-SEP-01 03:21 4 010924 P4 ARS1 STD Tuesday AM 24-SEP-01 23:55 2 010924 P2 ARS1 DRK* Wednesday AM 25-SEP-01 22:12 2 010925 P2 ARS1 STD* Thursday AM 26-SEP-01 22:09 2 010926 P2 ARS1 STD* Friday AM 27-SEP-01 22:07 2 010927 P2 ARS1 STD* Saturday AM 28-SEP-01 22:04 2 010928 P2 ARS1 STD* The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
