CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 39 24-Sep-01 through 30-Sep-01 L. Fletcher GENERAL Solar activity was high, with the baseline flux at C2 level. There were 12 M class flares, and one X-class flare (X2.6) on September 24th from NOAA AR 9632. Transequatorial interconnecting loops were also seen, and at the end of the week two slow LDEs from 9628, 9632 led to beautiful spiny arcades. SXT TECHNICAL SXT functioned without problems, no new anomalies to report SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010928.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget reports HXR observations of the X2.6 flare. Although Yohkoh missed the peak of the flare due to being in night, the Czech-built Hard X-ray Spectrometer (HXRS) observed it in multiple energy bands. The two can be intercalibrated. Short-timescale variability in the 13-23 keV band of HXT was observed in the flare rise phase. CAMPAIGNS SXT did not support any campaigns this week. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL No changes SEMINARS There was no seminar this week, however Boris Somov gave us a tutorial about reconnection during an extended coffee break on Friday afternoon. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 40 (01-Oct-01 through 6-Oct-01) We will be supporting Brigitte Schmieder's JOP from 3 October, so there may be a special flare table loaded. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 30-SEP-01 20:18 2 010930 P2 ARS1 DFF* Tuesday AM 01-OCT-01 21:57 3 011001 P3 ARS1 DRK* Wednesday AM 02-OCT-01 20:13 2 011002 P2 ARS1 JOP* Thursday AM 03-OCT-01 18:29 2 011003 P2 ARS1 JOP* Friday AM 04-OCT-01 18:26 2 011004 P2 ARS1 JOP* Saturday AM 05-OCT-01 18:24 2 011005 P2 ARS1 STD* The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. A '*' means that the UT date of pass 1 differs from the JST date This table plan is likely to change. Prepare for last minute changes. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
