CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 40 1-Oct-01 through 7-Oct-01 L. Fletcher, H. Hudson GENERAL Solar activity was low, with 5 M-class flares (but not uninteresting ones; see this week's science nugget). SXT TECHNICAL SXT functioned without problems, no new anomalies to report. Canopus was temporarily lost under normal conditions at the end of the week, and image roll ensued as expected. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/011005.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget reports the M9.1 flare of October 1, a spiny arcade with SADs already visible in the standard movies, plus a nearly homologous partner from three days earlier. The nugget questions again our understanding of homology in flare/CME events. CAMPAIGNS SXT began to support SOHO JOP 131/149 for Brigitte Schmieder, but the uplink timing is not so good and we won't plan to do fixed pointings until the coming week. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL L. Fletcher departed. N. V. Nitta arrived and will be the SXT CO in week 41. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week because of the ASJ meeting, however Boris Somov appeared again for tea and a homework assignment to key D-toh staffers. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
