CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 42 15-Oct-01 through 21-Oct-01 N. Nitta GENERAL Several intense flares, including two X-class flares, occurred on 19 October, in AR 9658, AR 9661 and AR 9671. Although AR 9661 was reported to have decayed considerably following the two X-class flares, it seems to be responsible for an M3 flare on 21 October. The X-class flares were associated with halo CMEs, and here we are, under a major geomagnetic storm (starting 21-Oct 16 UT). SXT TECHNICAL No problems to report. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/011019.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget compares HXT and TRACE 1600 A data taken during the Max Millennium #6 campaign (March 2000) to show that UV emission is well correlated with hard X-ray emission, but not restricted to the locations of precipitation of non-thermal electrons. CAMPAIGNS SXT support a VLA campaign and SOHO JOP 131/149. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL H. Hudson departed for Berkeley after intense work on the global waves in soft X-rays. SEMINARS No seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 43 (22-Oct-01 through 28-Oct-01) Brigitte Schmieder's JOP continues until the 23rd. We will also support the joint observation between TRACE and SacPeak to look at transition region moss at high time/spatial resolution. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday PM 22-OCT-01 09:05 1 011022 P1 ARS2 JOP+TRM Monday PM 22-OCT-01 14:09 4 011022 P4 ARS1 DIFF Tuesday PM 23-OCT-O1 07:21 1 011023 P1 ARS2 JOP+TRM Tuesday PM 23-OCT-O1 12:24 4 011023 P4 ARS1 STD Wednesday PM 24-OCT-01 07:17 1 011024 P1 ARS1 DARK Wednesday PM 24-OCT-01 12:21 4 011024 P4 ARS1 STD Thursday PM 25-OCT-01 07:13 1 011025 P1 ARS2 TRM Thursday PM 25-OCT-01 12:18 4 011025 P4 ARS1 STD Friday PM 26-OCT-01 05:30 1 011026 P1 ARS2 TRM Friday PM 26-OCT-01 10:32 4 011026 P4 ARS1 STD Saturday PM 27-OCT-01 05:25 1 011027 P1 ARS2 TRM Saturday PM 27-OCT-01 10:15 4 011027 P4 ARS1 STD The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
