CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 42

GENERAL 

Several intense flares, including two X-class flares, occurred on
19 October, in AR 9658, AR 9661 and AR 9671.  Although AR 9661 was
reported to have decayed considerably following the two X-class 
flares, it seems to be responsible for an M3 flare on 21 October.
The X-class flares were associated with halo CMEs, and here we are,
under a major geomagnetic storm (starting 21-Oct 16 UT).

This week's nugget compares HXT and TRACE 1600 A data taken during
the Max Millennium #6 campaign (March 2000) to show that UV emission 
is well correlated with hard X-ray emission, but not restricted to 
the locations of precipitation of non-thermal electrons.

example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any 
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
