CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 47 19-Nov-01 through 24-Nov-01 D. McKenzie, J. Sato GENERAL Flare activity was higher this week, with many C flares, and three M flares (almost X, at M9.9). We followed active region NOAA 9704 during the latter part of the week, as part of a Sigmoid Target of Opportunity campaign; the region produced one slow LDE (C-class) on Thursday, and two M flares on Friday. SXT TECHNICAL We returned the flare table to 1x1 PFIs this week, with AlMg and Be filters, and three resolutions in the AlMg images. Unfortunately, we got no images of the M flares due to an electronics hangup in SXT. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/011123.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's nugget describes the sigmoid campaign on NOAA 9704, which produced some geoeffective eruptions. CAMPAIGNS No official campaigns were planned to support, but we ran a Target of Opportunity campaign for the sigmoid in NOAA 9704. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
